My Scheming Milk Extract Brightening Mask review

I'M IN THE MILKY WAY
The song "I Love It" by Icona Pop just popped up when I saw the word "Milk" on the packaging, hence the title HAHA. What does seeing the word "Milk" bring you to? It got me to think about Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, who was renowned for her radiant skin, all thanks to the donkey milk she bathed in regularly to keep her skin young and beautiful. Today, let's see what this My Scheming Milk Extract Brightening Mask can do!

My Scheming Milk Extract Brightening Mask (5pcs for RM25.90)

My Scheming originated from Taiwan and is famous for its blackhead mask.

The Bad Ones
Like the Freeman Dead Sea Minerals Anti-Stress Mask, this mask is not Paraben-free (you can read this article here about paraben if you're wondering why it has been highlighted here) and it has Phenoxyethanol (an alternative to Paraben) as well. However, I'm okay with them since the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) concluded that Parabens at the low levels found in personal care products are not a concern. I've been relying on CIR for all of my cosmetic product reviews and I find them quite reliable, so I feel okay to let this one go.

I highlighted in the Innisfree Clay Mousse Mask review that lactic acid is known for its anti-ageing properties, but it may irritate your skin if it is on the sensitive end. Just make sure to use your finger to apply some of the mask essence on your face to test before applying the mask to your whole face.

Citric Acid, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract and Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract can potentially irritate sensitive skin as well if the concentration is too high, which I believe shouldn't be the case here. We shall find that out later on how it works on my skin!

HOW TO USE
It's the same for every mask. You need to always cleanse and tone your face before placing the mask on your skin. After that just leave it on for 15 to 20minutes before removing the mask. If there is any essence remaining on the face, gently pat and massage the skin until it has fully absorbed the essence. For this mask, you're not supposed to wash off the essence. After that, go on and apply your favourite moisturiser to lock in all the nourishing ingredients and you're done!

The mask!

SMELL, TOUCH, SMELL
I detected a faint milky smell when it was on my face. It smelled just like my DIY mask made with milk and aloe vera! Like the My Beauty Diary mask and Sister Diary mask (which are both Taiwanese brands like this one), it comes with plenty of essence. There was so much essence I was thinking of decanting it and keeping it for further use. The essence looks milky and is very watery and the smell is so good it makes me want to drink it so bad (please don't do that)!

It came with a pearl paper. Remove the pearl paper before putting it on your face.

ON MY FACE
Okay let's get real. My forehead itched a little with the mask on. I was a little worried and was constantly checking my face in the mirror in case anything went wrong. I ended up peeling off the top part of my mask because I noticed a little redness on the area between my brows. At this point, my brows were a little itchy as well. But since I was feeling okay with the areas below my eyes, I left the mask on half dangling off my cheek.

Putting on the mask and slowly positioning it.

THE REAL DEAL
My 20-minute timer was up and I removed the mask immediately because I was starting to feel a little itchiness on the rest of my face. What I saw in the mirror a few seconds later scared me. A little red itchy bump was starting to form on the left side of my chin. I knew at that moment I needed to wash of the remaining essence instead of patting it in. This mask was either reacting with the toner I put beforehand or it's simply not suitable for my skin. That bump gone away almost immediately after I've washed off the mask essence.

The fit is perfect! It even managed to cover my forehead. I always tighten up the bottom part of the mask to give my face a lifting effect hehe.

I'M SORRY
I don't think I'll have the guts to try the mask without the toner because my skin is really sensitive lately and has been breaking out non-stop until I started taking Oratane a few weeks ago. It seemed like a really decent mask (although the ingredients are a bit not so favourable) and my previous experience with a DIY mask that smelled exactly like this was really good. Not sure what had gone wrong. ☹️

There was so much essence left on my hand after I've put on the mask. When I looked into the package, there was a lot of essence in there.

I DON'T MEAN TO
I feel so bad for having to say that this is not my favourite mask. They always say that if you have nothing good to say about a product in a review, then it's best not to review it at all. But I did like the fit and I did like the smell of the mask. I just don't get why it's giving me the bumps and itchiness even though this is made of wood pulp (I was having a really great masking experience with this wood pulp mask from Wangskin), probably because of the ingredients I highlighted above?

I don't think it made any difference to my pores. Instead, I thought it was the culprit that gave rise to the redder spot next to the more porous part of my cheek (circled).

YOU ALREADY KNOW
Yeah, I don't think I need to say much at this part. Although it seemed to have brightened and softened my skin a little, it irritated my skin and almost gave me a red itchy bump near my mouth. So, if your skin is rather sensitive (I think my combination skin is slowly heading towards this direction, what have I done to my skin??? 😭), you may want to skip this. BEFORE I GO
Just want to share a little on how to verify whether your My Scheming products are real or fake. I've talked about it in details in this post here when I did a review on the Malaysian online beauty store, MelMel. Do take a look to learn how to check the authenticity of your My Scheming products before proceeding to putting it on your skin. Those fake products may give you adverse skin conditions so it's better to be safe than sorry.

NOTE:
Mine is a real one as verified in the MelMel post.
